The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
