Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
