Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
